Most people treat curtains as an afterthought. They buy a standard rod, stick it right on top of the window frame, and call it a day. But if you walk into a luxury hotel or a professionally designed home, you’ll notice the curtains look different. They feel grander and more polished. The secret isn't necessarily the price of the fabric, but how they are hung. By following a few simple rules, you can make even budget curtains look like a million dollars.
One of the biggest mistakes is mounting the curtain rod directly on the window frame. This chops the wall in half and makes your ceilings feel lower than they actually are. Instead, aim to mount your rod about 15 to 30 cm above the window frame, or even closer to the ceiling. This draws the eye upward and creates the illusion of height, making the entire room feel much bigger and more expensive.
The higher the rod, the taller the room. It’s an instant architectural upgrade for your home.
Don't let your curtains block the view. If your rod is the same width as your window, the fabric will cover the glass even when fully open, making the room feel dark and cramped. Extend your curtain rod 15 to 30 cm past each side of the frame. This allows the curtains to sit against the wall when open, exposing the full window and letting in maximum natural light. It also makes your windows look twice as wide as they actually are.
There is nothing that makes a room look 'cheap' faster than curtains that end a few inches above the floor. It looks unfinished, much like wearing trousers that are too short. Your curtains should just touch or slightly graze the floor for a clean, premium look. If you want a more romantic or formal feel, you can let them 'puddle' slightly on the floor, but they should never be hovering.
When curtains are closed, they should still have some folds in them. If they look like a flat sheet of fabric when pulled shut, they are too narrow. To get that lush, high-end look, your combined curtain panels should be 1.5 to 2 times the width of the window. This extra volume provides a rich, full appearance that looks far more intentional and high-quality than a single skimpy panel.
